Spur-winged Plovers

I walk to the pasture to see spur-winged plovers. They are normally grouped loosely by the brown stained darker grass in a mossy dip by the stream. Today they are not there, and I wait, disappointed, for a short while before returning. I return, thinking about how much these birds give in their being there, and how much I have taken them for granted.
