A Chilli Seed

I split the scarlet pod with a sharp blade and scrape the seeds out with a single movement. One sliced seed sticks against the steel, its matt velvet in startling contrast to the sheen of polished metal. My eyes water from the stinging vapours or from the small cut that weeps deep scarlet blood.
